My role

Lead Product Designer

Company

Egym is an innovative fitness tech startup.

TL:DR

Partnering closely with product, and tech teams, I crafted a design vision for the unique and versatile white-labeled platform to empower any gym with personalized apps for their users. I also led the shipping it to life in a very tight deadlines.

Diving into users problems

Guidance is limited for less experienced users; simply choosing the right workout and knowing the next steps can be enough.

A fully guided journey is a luxury.

New gym users often feel intimidated by seasoned gym-goers and complex equipment.

Engaging with unqualified trainers can lead to improper guidance, raising the risk of injuries and ineffective routines, making it tough for beginners to start and stay consistent.

It's essential to know how well you're performing—are you making progress? Is it substantial?

And how does it compare to others?

Our old app had all the features, but it wasn’t user-friendly: a long list crammed onto the screen, making navigation difficult and lacking any emotional connection.

The process

Diving deep into user preferences

First, I identified the typical user personas at the gym. My team and I gathered data and conducted dozens of interviews.

The results were then shared with key stakeholders.

Establishing product design principles

Creating a foundation for building solutions and aligning the team.

This approach, combined with research insights, helped us frame discussions around functionality and establish reasonable compromises.

John Ford, CEO

I just wanted to tell you how proud I am and how thankful I am for you going the extra mile so that we can now show our mobile app solution to the market. I really believe that the product that you have just developed is a game-changer for our industry.

There was also a lot to test before we could proceed

Changing the navigation and introducing a modular structure brought significant changes. To ensure we didn’t disrupt what was already working well, we needed to double-check numerous details.

Creating neutral yet appealing visualizations for biological age

Since it was a fun feature of the app, my team dedicated time to creating stunning animation effects to highlight different aspects of the user's biological age, such as muscle, cardio, and more.

Exploring machine learning opportunities to enhance the fitness experience

I developed a proof of concept in collaboration with an ML expert from my company, marking a breakthrough for the company's long-term vision.

Meet the solution

Each persona shared their specific priorities

This was achieved through both closed and open in-person onboarding sessions, where we practiced active listening and asked open-ended questions.

It was an insightful, in-depth activity that helped us identify and build key patterns.

Starting with low-fidelity clickable prototypes

It saved us a great deal of time in achieving the right information architecture and a well-balanced structure that aligned what gyms want their customers to see with what customers need.
